The outdoor magazines that reinvent adventure
Since the creation of Outside Details, I have become increasingly interested in publishing, and in particular in magazines derived from outdoor culture. Over time, my collection has grown: different formats, varied approaches, very unique objects. Today, I wanted to present to you those that inspire me the most, those that have introduced me to new perspectives and who, in one way or another, have contributed to shaping OD.
This list is far from exhaustive. Magazines like Mental Athletic, GO OUT, or Popeye have also greatly impressed me, but I preferred to spotlight here more
Acid Magazine is an independent annual publication that uses surfing as a pretext to explore much broader subjects: society, culture, environment, alternative imaginaries. The magazine deconstructs traditional surfing myths and places this practice in a socio-economic, historical, and cultural context. Taken over by Thomas and Baptiste Le Provost with Quentin Coulombier, the project is based on three strong commitments: defending independent culture, raising environmental awareness, and fighting against discrimination. This freedom is made possible by a model centered on the support of their readers, in order to preserve total independence.
Graphically, Acid stands out with a marked artistic direction, influenced by the codes of the ECAL. Photography, ever-present, structures the reading and gives the magazine its

Orienteer Mapazine is an unconventional publication that completely reinvents the magazine format. Created by photographer Rory Griffin and stylist Jack West, the project is based on their shared passion for the outdoors and technical clothing. Their idea: to merge a printed magazine with the layout of a real OS or A-Z map, creating a hybrid object that is nostalgic and deeply rooted in outdoor culture. Once unfolded, each issue reveals itself like a topographical map, paying homage to exploration and the aesthetics of territories.
Each edition brings together new images, editorials, and stories that celebrate outdoor activities, its lifestyle, and the technical clothing that accompanies it. Through its original format and sharp perspective, Orienteer has established itself at the heart of a growing community passionate about exploration and outdoor culture. The magazine is also committed to a solidarity initiative: part of the sales is donated to FareShare UK, which redistributes surplus food to charities.
Orienteer Mapazine thus stands out as a unique printed object, at the intersection of design, fashion, adventure, and cartography.

New Mountain Magazine is an independent publication dedicated to outdoor adventure, which rethinks the way to tell outdoor stories. The magazine highlights personal accounts written in the first person, strong photographs, and interviews that celebrate those who find joy outside, in their own way and without a performance mindset. Far from elite figures or spectacular feats, it values human, sensitive, and accessible stories.
Founded by Izzy Wedderburn, designer and Creative Director, the magazine is conceived as an inspiring printed object, to hold in your hands rather than to browse on a screen. This very carefully crafted visual identity, combined with authentic writing, makes New Mountain a hybrid medium between design, photography, and outdoor culture. It targets an audience that loves to explore, create, document, and experience nature with simplicity, a readership for whom adventure is measured more by emotions than by difficulty level.

Possessed Magazine is the printed publication of SATISFY, conceived as a cultural and creative extension of the brand. The magazine explores the world of running from a resolutely artistic angle, featuring personal stories, immersive photos, interviews, and unusual content that approaches running not as a performance, but as a sensitive and free experience. It includes thematic issues such as The Punk Issue or The Style Issue, blending conversations, playlists, recipes, exercises, and even horoscopes dedicated to runners.
Each issue is designed as a true graphic object. Some adopt a spectacular broadsheet format (35 × 50 cm), while others offer a very distinctive artistic direction, in line with the SATISFY aesthetic. This approach highlights the artisanal and collectible dimension of the magazine, which claims a careful production and selective distribution. All of this reflects the brand's philosophy: to reduce distractions, celebrate creativity, and allow runners to reach a state of "High" unique to effort and movement.
Founded and editorially directed by SATISFY, Possessed addresses a community of curious runners, sensitive to culture, style, and visual storytelling. It is a magazine that documents running in a different way: with punk energy, an artistic perspective, and a constant search for authenticity.

Amateurs is a magazine dedicated to an essential and universal form: love. Love of the natural world, the sun, the rain, the snow, the wind, and the ocean. Love of the human body, its abilities, its impulses, and everything it allows us to accomplish. Through ambitious photography and a narrative blending mysticism, history, and a quest for excellence in outdoor environments, the magazine seeks to infuse wonder, curiosity, and respect for nature.
Beyond its editorial line, Amateurs also stands out for its singular format: 34 × 26 cm, an unusual size in publishing, but perfectly suited to the visual and narrative richness it contains. A choice that enhances immersion and gives full strength to both images and texts.
“Amateurs is FSP and FSP is Amateurs” a way of affirming the unity between the magazine and the creative vision that drives it.

eye_C is defined as a hybrid editorial platform, combining a dynamic digital medium with a more timeless print publication. The magazine explores the worlds of fashion and culture through a variety of formats: articles, interviews, reports, and photographic editorials.
Its editorial identity is characterized by meticulous art direction and a true sense of imagery. The magazine does not limit itself to relaying news: it also conceives its own visual productions, as evidenced by the campaign "The North Face Urban Exploration SS25." But also through the collaborations that the magazine has with brands like And Wander, Quiet Mountain Cafe, or Hanwag. These creative initiatives allow it to position itself at the crossroads of cultural analysis and a strong visual aesthetic.
Furthermore, eye_C claims an "underground" and avant-garde sensibility in the selection of its subjects and the brands it highlights. This stance enhances its appeal to a curious readership seeking new proposals and emerging players rather than mainstream references.
